Amazon is unarguably the biggest player in the ebook publishing industry. That’s a fact you don’t have to run away from if you’re an author who intends to make appreciable and profitable impact in the ebook publishing industry.
I did not shy away from this many years ago despite the fact that some other online publishing companies were coming in board. I took a decision with my team to study how Amazon and it’s Kindle Direct Publishing platform works.
Why Amazon is the biggest player in the ebook publishing industry?
According to Authorearnings.com, “Across all publishing types, consumers spent roughly $5,755,000 a day on ebooks on Amazon.com in January-a run rate of over $2.1 billion a year…”
And this just the report on ebooks sales alone. There is also the income and sales from paperback books.
That should tell anyone that the biggest player in the ebook publishing industry is Amazon. They allow you to get your books published on their platform through their Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) platform.
Smashwords/Draft2digital vs Amazon
Smashwords (now Draft2digital) is the biggest distributor of indie books but Amazon is the biggest player. They own about 70% of the stakes!
So if you are really serious about self-publishing your books online and for maximum profits, you must use Amazon KDP.
Amazon is a friendly publishing company
The good part is that Amazon is a very friendly company to everyone wherever you are located around the world excoet for very few cases.
This is unlike some other publishing companies like Draft2digital. After Draft2digital merged or bought Smashwords, it closed down some accounts from some regions especially those of authors in Africa.
